Searching for Weather in Brown Dwarfs
نویسندگان
چکیده
We have used an innovative tuneable filter technique to carry out a search for the variability signatures of meterological process in the atmospheres of two nearby brown dwarfs. We find no evidence for variability in the L-type brown dwarf DENIS-P J12281547, and evidence for variability in the M-type brown dwarf LP944-20.

متن کاملShades of Black: Searching for Brown Dwarfs & Giant Planets
We have searched, so far in vain, for brown dwarfs or giant planets in the vicinity of several nearby stars using cameras built at Université de Montréal attached to the CFHT Adaptive Optics system. Here, we show how pairs of images taken simultaneously through separate filters on, and off, the 1.6 μm methane absorption band, can be used to completely defeat speckles, the dominant noise source,...
متن کاملSearching for proto-brown dwarfs: Extending near IR spectroscopy of protostars below the hydrogen burning limit
Recent observations of nearby star forming regions have offered evidence that young brown dwarfs undergo a period of mass accretion analogous to the T Tauri phase observed in young stars. Brown dwarf analogs to stellar protostars, however, have yet to be definitively observed. These young, accreting objects would shed light on the nature of the dominant brown dwarf formation process, as well as...
متن کاملObservations of Brown Dwarfs
■ Abstract The brown dwarfs occupy the gap between the least massive star and the most massive planet. They begin as dimly stellar in appearance and experience fusion (of at least deuterium) in their interiors. But they are never able to stabilize their luminosity or temperature and grow ever fainter and cooler with time. For that reason, they can be viewed as a constituent of baryonic “dark ma...
متن کاملChapter 1 Searching for Brown Dwarf Outflows
As outflow activity in low mass protostars is strongly connected to accretion it is reasonable to expect accreting brown dwarfs to also be driving outflows. In the last three years we have searched for brown dwarf outflows using high quality optical spectra obtained with UVES on the VLT and the technique of spectro-astrometry. To date five brown dwarf outflows have been discovered. Here the met...
